"If it ain't broke, don't fix it"...enhance it! The case for relationship coaching

The old adage , "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" is great advice. In making the case for relationship coaching, we say if it ain't broke, don't fix it, ENHANCE it! In many instances, if and when couples seek help for marital problems, it is often times too late. They have let the problems fester and supressed their feelings to the point of no return. Or even worse, one of the people in the couple refuses to fully engage in therapy for a number of reasons and the damage is already done. This is the reason we have choen to engage in the field of relationship coaching.

Relationship coaching is a client-focused service where individuals or couples are assumed to be healthy and able to achieve their relationship goals with the proper support, information and guidance. According to a model by Hayden and Whitworth, there are very contrasting differences between therapy and coaching. Therapy assumes the client needs healing, coaching assumes the client is whole; Therapy focuses on feelings and past events, coaching focuses on actions and the future; Therapy explores the root of problems, coaching focuses on solving problems; therapy works for internal resolution of pain and to let go of old patterns, coaching works for external solutions to overcome barriers, learn new skills and implement effective choices.
